  • Name of Archive: Ivan Karp's Publications: An Online Archive
  • Description of Archive: Ivan Karp was National Endowment for the Humanities Professor in the Graduate Institute of the Liberal Arts at Emory University and co-director of the Center for the Study of Public Scholarship (CSPS) until his retirement in May 2011. Before that he served as Curator of African Ethnology at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History and taught at Indiana University and Colgate University. He passed away on Sept. 17, 2011.

Karp’s work has had a broad influence in anthropology, African studies, museum studies, African philosophy, public scholarship and many other fields. This online archive of his publications is intended to make that work widely available. Thematically organized links provide lists of Karp’s books and downloads of his articles, as well as lists of the works published in the two book series for which he served as editor. Articles have been grouped into four themes, although many of his papers address more than one of these areas: Museums, Exhibitions and Public Scholarship; African Philosophy; Social Theory and African Systems of Thought; and the Iteso People of Kenya. T.O. Beidelman offers an overview of Karp’s work in an article published in African Studies Review in 2012 and available in the archive. All downloadable papers are used with permission. Please do not recirculate them, but feel free to direct others to this online archive website.

The archive also includes links to several videos of Ivan Karp's presentations (including one on writing successful grant proposals), to audio from a memorial in his honor held at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African Art in November 2012, and to a finding guide for Karp's research papers at the National Anthropological Archives. Also available are links and information concerning the Ivan Karp and Corinne Kratz Fund and the African Critical Inquiry Program, which continue Ivan Karp's work and legacy.
